Colon & Rectal Surgery Educational Program (CARSEP)

Continuing Education

One of the most important functions of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons is to provide continuing medical education for its members, and others interested in diseases of the colon and rectum. It has done this over the years through presentations at its annual convention. These presentations have included original studies, reviews through panel discussions, formal courses, workshops, etc.

However, the surgeons own personal effort is the principal factor in the successful accomplishment of continuing self-education. This can best be done through daily practice, consultation with colleagues, attendance at hospital and medical school staff meetings, etc., and by a systematic study of the current literature.

Self Assessment

There is, however, a need to evaluate one’s knowledge on a current basis. As a means of accomplishing this, the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons has offered a Self-Assessment program since 1973. The Colon and Rectal Surgery Educational Program (CARSEP) consists of a Syllabus designed as a study vehicle preparatory to taking the Self-Assessment Exam. Syllabus VII is the current program developed by the ASCRS Self-Assessment Committee and is comprised of multiple choice questions, including key feature questions and some matching which cover four major categories: Anorectal, Colon and Rectal Neoplasms, Colon and Rectal Benign and Basic Science – Critical Care. There is a section for Case Studies, one for Photo Quiz and a section on Answers, Critiques and References. The Syllabus, Exam Book and Answers/Critiques/References booklet comprise the CARSEP Program.

Educational Objectives

This self-assessment program is designed to provide surgeons with in-depth and up-to-date knowledge relative to surgery of the colon and rectum. At the conclusion of this CARSEP program, the physician should be able to:

  • Assess how he makes decisions in common clinical situations; where he is likely to error and then develop his own self-assessment program of improvement;
  • Increase his knowledge of the latest findings in the field of colon and rectal surgery;
  • Expand his knowledge of colorectal disease through the use of a photo quiz;
  • Identify strengths and weaknesses in the practice of colon and rectal surgery.

Target Audience

This self-assessment program is intended for the education of the colon and rectal surgeon, as well as for general surgeons and others involved in the treatment of diseases affecting the colon and rectum.
